Don't Get Caught by Phishing

Why would employees need to know about phishing emails?

Audience

The target audience is a small-medium-sized financial planning business with 90-100 employees, located in 3 offices across the state.

Problem

At this time the data indicates that 91% of data breaches start as a phishing attack and financial service firms are targeted 60% more than other types of business.

As a growing Financial Services company, JackRussell Investment has doubled in size in the past year, partly due to its top-rated retirement planning services. Many of the employees have little to no knowledge of the potential risks of Phishing email.

Solution

After analyzing the needs of the employees, I determined that the employees needed to have a clear understanding of what Phishing is and how to identify the warning signs in their email communications.

My Process

I drew on the ADDIE framework as well as Gagne's 9 Events to design and develop this scenario-based eLearning experience.  I developed the course around the examples of Phishing emails and the new reporting strategy that the company will be using to report Phishing.  I used Action Mapping, Visual Storyboarding, and Articulate Storyline 360 to fully develop the course.

Action Maps

Since JackRussell Financial is a fictitious company, I acted as the subject matter expert. I did so by conducting my own extensive research online and reviewed other legitimate companies that offer similar learning modules on Phishing.

Storyboard

After conducting my research, I discovered that there are seven main sections of an email that are common targets for phishing.  The seven sections can be grouped into three categories. Using that information, I created scenarios based on the three categories. Using Microsoft Powerpoint, I created a visual storyboard to map out the content and flow of my Phishing course.

Prototype

I created my interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline 360. I developed 4 slides including the title slide, welcome slide, branching slide, and one of the interactive presentation slides. This allowed me to determine the functionality of the interactivity. As well as a visual representation of the look, and feel of the project including colors, fonts, logo, and other branding features.

Full Course Development

After reviewing the feedback I received from my peers, I applied several changes to the completed course.  I adjust the branding colors and font for a more consistent visual presentation.  I included some animated graphics as well as some audio that I sourced for this project. I am particularly pleased with the finished course.
